Service Host: Local System Issues – Windows

Task Manager shows that Service Host: Local System using up all your resources and is taking High CPU Usage, Using too much Networks, High Memory Usage or High Disk Usage. You are not alone. Most Windows users have the same problem. Read on to find effective ways to fix the service host local system  issues easily.

What is Service Host: Local System?

Service Host: Local System is a bundle of system processes, or call it a generic service hosting container. This service built to perform few numbers of System Scheduled Tasks Automatically. It includes many required system services and processes including Windows Auto Update would be running in it. That’s why it’s very likely to take up huge RAM, memory, disk and even network bandwidth and draining computer resources especially after getting a Windows 10 update.

IF you pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del, you can easily get the quick access to Task Manager in Windows System. Stay on the first Process tab, by scrolling down you should find many Service Host related processes, such as Service Host:

  • Local System (Network Restricted)
  • Service Host: Local Service
  • Service Host: Network Service
  • etc…

Fix Error Solution #1: Stop Superfetch Service

SuperFetch decreases the boot time and make must-load programs more efficiently. However, it has been identified as a potential cause of disk performance issues.

  1. Click “Start” and type “Command Prompt” in the search function. Once it appears in the search results, you should right-click it and select the option “Run as Administrator” from the context menu.
  2. Now the Command Prompt window appears. Type the following comand: net(dot)exe stop superfetch and press Enter key.
  3. Wait for a few minutes to see if changes can be seen in your computer’s performance.
  4. Run a disk check by typing the following command: chkdsk.exe /f /r and press Enter key on your keyboard.
  5. Then type Y to confirm the disk check.

Fix Error Solution #2: Directly disable Service Host Local System tasks

  1. Open Windows Task Manager. (Press Win+R and type taskmgr and press Enter)
  2. You will see all the currently running Processes in Computer. Just Scroll Down & Find out Service Host.
  3. Expand the Service Host: Local System so as to clearly see what items are using more disk, CPU or memory.
  4. Once identified the items that are hogging your computer resources, right-click on it and select End Task option.
  5. A new window will popup asking the confirmation to End the Task. Just select (tick mark) on Abandon unsaved data and shutdown and click on Shut down button.
  6. Repeat many times until all suspicious tasks were suspended. Meanwhile, keep an eye on the CPU, disk or memory tabs, see if the percent number is decreasing.
  7. That’s it. You just stopped Service Host: Local System process from eating away your resources.

Fix Error Solution #3: Disable Backup Intelligent Transfer Service

  1. Open Windows Task Manager. (Press Win+R and type taskmgr and press Enter)
  2. At Windows Task Manager, click Services tab (extreme last tab).
  3. On the Services window, at the bottom, you will find Open Services button. Just click on it.
  4. A new Window will open up with a huge list of all the Services. Find the service with the name Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Right click on it and click Stop option.

This Service will Stop in few seconds. Windows Auto Update Service is Stopped now means your Internet Data is now not used by this Service. You saved Network Data and Computer Resources using this Solution. This solution works efficiently, and you don’t need any further optimizations as of now.

Fix Error Solution #4: Disable Automatic Updates

  1. Press Windows + R keys to open Run, type services.msc in the box and press Enter.
  2. A new window with all the Services will pop-up. Find Windows Update Service and Double click on Windows Update service and Windows Update Service Properties Screen will pop up.
  3. Locate the Startup type under General tab and select Disabled from the drop-down list. Click OK to apply the change.
  4. Now let’s disable Service Host Local System Process permanently.

Fix Error Solution #5: Repairs the corrupted or broken system files

You should run a scan to check the system files. It detects and repairs the corrupted or broken system files automatically.

  1. Click “Start” and type “Command Prompt” in the search function. Once it appears in the search results, you should right-click it and select the option “Run as Administrator” from the context menu.
  2. Now the Command Prompt window appears. Type here “sfc /scannow” and press Enter key.
  3. The scan process starts now. You should have the patience for some time now until the verification percentage reaches to 100% and shows you the result. Don’t close the window until it verifies all the files.
  4. After this type Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press Enter key.
  5. When finish the process, restart your PC.
